The positive influence of sustainable hotels

Traveling is one of the most exciting ways to explore the world, but it is also an activity that can have a significant impact on the environment. In a world where sustainability is increasingly central, the travel industry is no exception. A sustainable hotel, which focuses as much as possible on environmentally friendly practices and responsible tourism, is quickly becoming the norm for conscious travelers. This growing trend not only promises a positive impact on the environment, but also offers unique and satisfying experiences for guests. Whether it is an eco-lodge in South America or boutique luxury hotels in Amsterdam, everybody needs to show their commitment to sustainability.

What is a sustainable hotel?

Sustainable hotels, also known as a “green hotel,” are properties that are committed to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting social responsibility. These hotels strive for a balance between hospitality and sustainability by using sustainable materials and energy-saving technologies, such as solar panels on the roof.

Environmentally friendly practices in a hotel

  • Energy efficiency

A sustainable hotel often uses energy-saving equipment, such as LED lighting and advanced HVAC systems. A sustainable hotel can also use solar energy and other renewable energy sources to reduce their energy consumption.

  • Water saving

Most sustainable hotels implement water-saving measures, such as water-saving shower heads and toilets. In addition, water is also saved by reusing rainwater and landscape irrigation.

  • Waste reduction and recycling

A sustainable hotel minimizes waste by implementing recycling programs and offering products made from natural materials that are reusable, such as glass water bottles instead of plastic bottles. In addition, a hotel can also reduce its footprint by purchasing products made from recycled materials.

  • Local Involvement

In most cases, a sustainable hotel supports the local community by, for example, using local products in the restaurant, hiring local artisans for furnishings and art, and collaborating with local charities and initiatives.

Sustainability at Aedes

At Aedes we believe that the past, present, and future should co-exist harmoniously. De Durgerdam is a great example. Once the lively hub of the fishing village, its light had begun to fade. We’ve revived it for a bright new future by taking bones from the past, creating an idyll for today, whilst safeguarding the building for over 250 years. Sustainability is a core value at Aedes and a red thread in all of our hotel offers. De Durgerdam, and our two upcoming projects, an eco-resort in a nature park in the East of The Netherlands, as well as a luxury city hotel in Amsterdam.  We take actions to reduce our carbon footprint, lower our environmental impact and add value to local communities.

Sustainability at De Durgerdam

We go above and beyond the industry standards. That’s why when we approach a project, we take it seriously, with a top-to-bottom look at sustainable design, construction, and working/operating methods.

For example:

  • Solar power
  • Gasless building
  • Energy saving equipment
  • Water recycling system
  • Recycling and reusing materials
  • Circularity and composting
  • Menu with locally sourced ingredients, kitchen garden and plant based foods
  • Eco credentials such as Green Globe
