Sommelier

The venue

Located in Amsterdam-Noord, just a stone’s throw away from the city center (15 min), our 14-room boutique hotel and restaurant De Mark, in collaboration with Michelin-star chefs Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot, offer a great place to work in one of the most beautiful spots known to The Netherlands. Low-key yet the place to be for both guests and team members alike. Don’t take our word for it, find out for yourself. We promise, the views will never get boring.

Who we are

We are an independent hotel with restaurant, and proud to be part of Aedes, an Amsterdam based property investor and hospitality company. How do we relate? Well, in short Aedes creates places that tell a unique story and have positive impact. Be it an office, a home or in our case a hotel. In De Durgerdam we believe in relaxed hospitality where everyone feels welcome and can be themselves. A feeling of genuinely being cared for, carefully crafted by the art of anticipation. Here questions are always met with possibilities. ‘No’ does not exist in our dictionary and we like to go the extra mile for a smile, so that every experience is a memorable one. On top of that we try to do things a little better. Day in, day out, while having fun.

The Role…

Imagine getting on your (electric) bike and enjoying a great (15-minute) scenic ride to one of the most beautiful villages of the Netherlands. Once you arrive in Durgerdam, you prepare yourself for the day by having a nice cup of tea or coffee (freshly ground, the good stuff). After your moment of ‘me-time’, you join your team for the daily briefing and let the day begin. You check in on the cellar, review the wine list, do some work on a white bordeaux training for the team and maybe pull something special for the evening’s pairings. Then the first guests arrive, and you welcome them warmly. You guide them through the menu, recommend bottles that surprise, and pour with precision and charm. You share a story or two, about a winemaker you met, or a vineyard clinging to a hillside somewhere in Sicily. During service, you’re fully present. Glasses topped, pairings flowing, the team learning from your lead. In the corner of your eye, you spot a guest arriving to check into their hotel room, so you step in to help them get settled. We’re hybrid like that. As time flies when you’re having fun, the service ends and it’s already time to enjoy that great bike ride back home. Curious what tomorrow will bring.

You in a nutshell

You bring your own personality to work, but you share our passion for excellence and enjoy working in a team. You enjoy welcoming new people into our world and hearing their story. You don’t shy away from the serious issues, but you also want everyone to have a good time.  You love to discover new things and have the know-how to adapt when necessary. You hold sustainability and hospitality close to your heart.

Main Duties

As our sommelier, you’ll be the soul behind our wine program. You’ll handpick bottles, create thoughtful by-the-glass selections, and guide guests through our offerings with genuine enthusiasm. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • You’ll further build and shape our cellar, always hunting for hidden gems and perfect pairings working together with our importers.
  • You’ll keep designing our by-the-glass offering to surprise and delight, from aperitivo to last sip.
  • You’ll lead pairings that lift each dish and tell a story worth tasting.
  • You’ll coach and inspire the team, making wine feel less intimidating and more inviting.
  • You’ll join us on the floor 3–4 shifts a week, sometimes leading, sometimes supporting, always present.
  • You’ll collaborate on menus, host tastings, and bring your own ideas to the table.
  • You’ll help position De Mark as a wine destination, serious about the craft, never too serious about itself.

Requirements

  • 2+ years' experience in a fine dining or wine focused restaurant; sommelier-trained (WSET, CMS, SDEN, etc.).
  • Deep love for wine, with an eye for rare gems that offer great value.
  • Confident teaching and coaching skills; you love to share.
  • Strong organizational & communication skills, fluent in English; Dutch is a plus.
  • Team player who leads by example yet thrives on independent initiative.
  • You're in your early/mid-career, looking to grow and leave a mark.

What’s in it for you?

  • Competitive salary & great additional benefits (incl. bike plan, 100% travel costs reimbursement)
  • Free parking
  • Housing opportunities
  • Steep learning curve, possibilities to grow with us in our other upcoming restaurants and hotels
  • Opportunity to work for a hotel brand with other projects in the pipeline
  • Healthy and fresh food and great coffee
  • Exclusive wine tastings, workshops, and curated events.
  • A chance to help shape, and possibly head up, our wine programme as we grow.
